Hemodialysis: Dialysis process in which undesired metabolites and toxic by-products, such as urea and creatinine, are removed from blood.
Hemofiltration: Ultrafiltration process in which undesired metabolites and toxic by-products, such as urea and creatine, are removed from blood.
Heterogeneous membrane: Membrane consisting of two or more components that differ by chemical or phase composition.
Hindered transport: Combined partition, diffusion and convection process in which the effective partition, diffusion and viscous drag coefficients in a restricted environment depend upon the ratio of the effective radius of the penetrant molecule to that of the pore.
Hollow fiber membrane: Membrane formed from hollow fibers with selective layer on outer or inner surface of the fiber.
Homogeneous membrane: Membrane with essentially the same structural and transport properties throughout its thickness.
Hybrid membrane; Mixed matrix membrane: Membrane that is formed of organic and inorganic components, e.g. of nano-size inorganic particles dispersed in organic (polymeric) matrix.
Hydrophilic membrane: Membrane manufactured from hydrophilic or hydrophilizated material or having the surface made from such material.
Hydrophobic membrane: Membrane manufactured from hydrophobic or hydrophobizated material or having the surface made from such material.
